LAMAR VALLEY AND BEARTOOTH PASS

Tim and I were up and at it and on the road before 8AM this morning. And of course the day did not go as planned. However it really was the best day ever!

The plan was to just drive out through Lamar Valley and turn around before the east entrance/exit to Yellowstone. The drive to that point didn’t take that long other than the 3-4 herds of 100+ bison each that we had to CAREFULLY drive through.

At this point since it was still early in the day we continued on. Thought we would have seen the Beartooth Pass by now. Onward we went to Beartooth after a quick glance at a map to know exactly where we were going.

Okay! Let’s just say ... OMG! Breathtaking. Jaw dropping! The most beautiful scenery ever!!!

This is one of the most breathtaking routes near Yellowstone National Park. Named a National Scenic Byway’s “All-American Road,” the highway climbs upward from here through the pass. Described by former CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt as 'the most beautiful drive in America'.

We drove onward through the small town of Silver Gate. Then Cooke City via the 68-mile stretch of Beartooth Highway. Onward again going through the pass we went at just shy of 11,000’ above sea level with 20 nearby peaks sitting at over 12,000’!

After going through the pass we descended into the town of Red Lodge. What a super cute town! This is where we decided to turn around to head back. Had we not already packed our picnic lunch and had Jett with us we would have stopped for a light lunch and an adult beverage.

On our return to basecamp we swung through Slough Creek Campground, back through the herds (and I mean herds) of bison. We passed our basecamp and made a quick stop at Boiling River before returning to the Airstream. It was a full ten hours of driving and one of our all time favorite drives.

Tomorrow brings a moving day for us. It will be a short distance to drive and will lead us to even more spectacular scenery here in Yellowstone!!! Onward!!!

D10 - 05/08/24 NOT THE PLAN

The Airstream stayed at about 52* inside last night without a heater on. With good bedding and warm jammies it’s the perfect sleeping weathe...
