CANYON VILLAGE IN YELLOWSTONE NP

Earlier in the week Tim and I drove the upper half of the Grand Loop Road here in Yellowstone. One of the places we really wanted to revisit this week was the Canyon Village area. It was  here in 1872 that Thomas Moran painted his famous picture of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone that now hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The main attraction here is the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. This time we wanted to hit the rest of the stops we missed including both brinks of the falls. The stops that we did today included Artist Point, part of Uncle Tom’s Trail, Lower Falls Brink and Inspiration Point. One can only stand in amazement of the entire canyon.

The upper brink was closed on the south rim along with the 300’ set of stairs on Uncle Tom’s Trail for renovations. That was fine since it takes 600’ (with switch backs) to get to the lower brink on the north rim. So that was enough cardio for the day.

Tim and I were really glad that we were able to return to admire this beautiful location here in the park. The canyon is about 24 miles long, between 800 to 1,200 feet deep and .25 to .75 miles wide.

On or return to basecamp we saw a few more bison to end the day and the sun gave us yet more beautiful views of this amazing place!
