What a fabulous day! Perfect weather!! First as we were hitching up Hank and his parents stopped by to say hello. They knew we were here. If you remember we met the sweet Dachshund puppy Hank way back in Banff National Park in Canada. And have followed each other on social media since. Then saw them again a few weeks back. He’s all grown up now! More than likely we will continue to crisscross paths back to the states.
Once we moved into the town of Valdez and got settled it was time to re-charge. It’s been thirty days since being connected to power. We need to wash clothes and take care of a few other tasks while in town.
The other amazing thing about today was being just two sites away from one of our SC Airstream friends. Perfect location! Love when this happens!! We then spent the afternoon sightseeing. The weather is gorgeous today. Who wants to wash clothes on a day like this? Let’s save that for a rainy day.
Our first stop was to run out to Glacier View Park. Very cool. Literally you can feel the coolness coming from the glacier. Then we drove back out past all the waterfalls and stopped at the Old Railroad Tunnel then on to Thompson Pass.
Sometimes you just can’t stop while towing. Either parking lots are full or you think you could misjudge the entry or just not enough distance to safely stop. So we wanted to come back without the Airstream to make the stops that we missed on the way in. Just stunning! So glad we had the opportunity.
When we returned to town we made another stop back at the Solomon Fish Hatchery. They have a self guided tour that we wanted to do and also see what was going on there. So many salmon! Unbelievable. Basically the salmon are hatched here. Eventually released into the wild after growing to target weights. They then begin feeding in Prince William Sound and eventually migrate to the ocean to winter. Then return back right here to the hatchery. Salmon essentially have their own internal global positioning system (GPS) via the magnetic field. Not only do they know where they are, they know when they have to start back in order to return to spawn on time.
Our evening ended with a lovely dinner with our SC Airstream friends. Delightful company and a delicious dinner. We so enjoy spending time with them. And yes … our paths will also continue to crisscross as we all begin our journeys back to the lower 48.
Before dark-thirty (it is getting dark now) we took Jett for her evening walk along the docks. She was so interested in the sea otter and was so concerned when he went under. Poor Jett would look at us then back down to the water with concern until he came back up to eat his fish that he was catching. So cute!
