SKAGWAY, ALASKA
Never say never. Detour! We had no intention or desire to go to Skagway. However we find ourselves here. This stop had been taken off our list for several reasons. One … too touristy for us. Two there had been a landslide a few weeks ago cutting off any road access.
Our lovely New Hampshire friends encouraged (twisted arms) us to come. Glad we did. The drive here was another spectacular sight. Again the scenery is like no other. Beautiful long lakes. Magnificent mountains. So interesting the area along the way with large boulders landscaped with small spruce trees trying to grow on them. And to think people during the Gold Rush climbed these mountains lugging tons of gear by hand.
As we got settled in town we discovered it’s not so bad. Just deal with the tourists. Our basecamp location could not be better. We have discovered the town has been a bit glorified. I get it. It’s because of those coming off the cruise ships. Almost disappointed to walk into what you think might be an old saloon only to find it a brand new building.
Our short walk around town was fun. Tons of expensive high end jewelry stores. T-shirt shops and the brewery’s. We eventually met up with our New Hampshire Airstream friends for cocktails and dinner at the Skagway Fish Co.
After dinner Tim and I walked Jett on the docks looking for Sea Puppies. None to be found! Hopefully we can find her some action tomorrow!
