Rain was expected for us today in our travels. We were able to get the Airstream hitched and ready to roll prior to the rain starting. There were also now four cruise ships in port with a total of over 11,000 people on board them heading to town. It was time to depart.
Our border crossing back into Canada was easy. Along the way we stopped to helped a couple who had a flat tire. Their Fiat had no spare and with no cellular service not much that could be done. So we drove 25 kilometers to the next town of Carcross to get help sent back to them.
The drive today back up the Klondike Highway was just as amazing seeing this mountainous scenery in the opposite direction and now with rain and low clouds. Incredible views in every direction. There’s also definitely some smoke from forest fires in the area.
The rain was still at a drizzle in Carcross and we had hoped to stop at the desert there. This time there was parking available! Fascinating to see a desert out here. Carcross Desert is commonly referred to as a desert, but is actually a series of northern sand dunes. It’s to humid to be considered a true desert.
Eventually we made it back to the ALCAN Highway where we turned right to begin heading south east. The weather today was much cooler than anticipated. I had dressed for 68-70 degrees. It was 46* all day!
Our basecamp for the evening was Marsh Lake again. Just as we were about to arrive there I received a text message from our Airstream New Hampshire friends. They had just arrived there too! No way! So we had another enjoyable evening with them. They had a campfire going and invited us over for the evening. After comparing notes it looks like our travel over the next few days will be pretty similar and we will now probably travel these next few days together.
