During our drivers meeting last night we decided not to go to the boondocking location near Exit Glacier. We needed to get a little farther back up the Kenai Peninsula. We instead decided to try to get into the boondocking location near Portage. With our fingers crossed we drove with the hopes of getting in there.
Back towards the beginning of July we tried numerous times to get in here as there are just a few spots we would fit. Today was our lucky day! Only one other van was here. The spot we would fit was open! This is an incredible place! We are on the edge of a trout filled lake with majestic mountains as a backdrop.
Right after we settled in I began making a lovely maple black hot tea. Perfect for this cool crisp afternoon. No sooner did I take a picture of ‘the view from my front door’ that we heard a commotion on the lake. For a split second thinking it was the ducks … woah … it was a moose that had just pushed through the thick brush on the other side of the lake and was now in the lake. She was now walking through the waters edge.
Jett was even aware and saw her. She got slightly excited watching the moose but never barked. What a surprise and special moment in time! Our afternoon was now spent sitting outside, drinking our hot tea, then fly fishing and watching the merganser ducks. Mama was teaching her ducklings to forage in the water. When one dove down, they all followed. We also kept a watch out, waiting for more moose.
Our dinner turned out to be leftovers. Had really thought we could catch some trout here since we know this lake is stocked with trout. We did see a guy catch a small one here today that he released.
Not long after we arrived here in this spectacular place a lovely couple, from California, who were here for a medical conference in Anchorage had stopped by. They were just riding around and had briefly talked to Tim. An hour or so later they came back with a bundle of firewood. They loved the view so much they came back! We hung out with them around the fire for a few hours. Enjoying the amazing views and their company. Perfect ending to another amazing day!
(by late night five other rigs had joined us)
