D112 - 08/18/24 DAY 2 SKAGWAY

Today’s weather was gorgeous! The high was 72* F. Not windy. No rain. Sunny. Beautiful blue skies with scattered clouds. Perfect. The lows have recently been in the upper 40’s to low 50’s. Highs have been in the sixties with today being one of the recent warmest days.

The one thing I forgot to mention was our border crossing yesterday back into Alaska. First the U.S. Border agents were really nice and doing their jobs. They asked for our passports. Asked if we had Jett’s CDC certificate. Asked if we had food? Me thinking … Really!? You know we are towing a home on wheels with a kitchen in it. Do you have food?! Yes. Pull over! So we got searched.

Every RV was getting searched. The second agent who searched also wanted to see Jett’s CDC certificate and her rabies certificate. He only went in the Airstream with a bucket and only looked in the freezer and refrigerator. He confiscated nothing and sent us on our way after almost forgetting to hand us our passports back. We saw agents coming out of other RVs with full buckets of confiscated food.

Back to today … Tim and I spent the morning at basecamp then went back into town on foot to explore some more. Our plan, similar to what we do in Key West, walk a block to either side of Broadway (where all the action is here) then parallel on the side streets to where you need to go. Then go back to Broadway on one of the avenues. Works like a charm. Keeps us out of the majority of the crowds, you see more of the town and we get more steps in!

Swung by the ship that was in port. Stopped by a grocery to take pictures of food prices. Strolled through a gorgeous garden. Visited the historical Skagway Museum. Went into a knife shop and the Railway Store. Found some great historical buildings around town. Saw a few cribs. Dropped in a few of the outdoor gear shops. Went back to the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park Visitors Center.

Made it back to basecamp in time for our weekly family Zoom. Then met up with our Airstream New Hampshire friends for dinner at the Skagway Brewing Company. It was burger night! Not only was the beer great but the hamburgers were delicious as well.

Later after dinner we took Jett for her nightly stroll down to the harbor which is right behind us. There we watched the two cruise ships depart port. What a beautiful view. I love being surrounded by these magnificent snow capped mountains. We think we have spotted a better vantage point for the ship departures that we will scout tomorrow. No sea puppies to be found.

Dinner:

Big Kahuna Burger with ham, Swiss cheese and a slice of grilled pineapple!

Along with a house side salad!! Delicious!!

Last night at the museum we had rain off and on throughout the night and very strong winds. Other than that it was a very quiet night. Oh an...
