D98 - 08/04/24 VALDEZ, ALASKA

Voted best Alaska drive by the Wymer’s!

This beautiful sunny morning we drove out the Glenn Highway to Richardson Highway. Once on the Richardson it wasn’t long before we found ourselves at the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park Visitor Center. I was excited to visit here to learn more about this National Park and to get my passport stamp.

The road continued past Worthington Glacier. Thompson Pass. Then the old railroad tunnel. Bridal Veil Falls and Horsetail Falls. Spectacular scenery! The more we drove the more amazing it became. The natural powers of the earth are mind blowing.

Today we landed at Allison Point in Valdez, Alaska for the night. We are on the far side of Port Valdez from the town. Our friends from SC found us shortly after our arrival. So exciting every time we run into them. Or they run into us! LOL

Tim and I, after setting up the Airstream, eventually made our way around the bay to town. Along the way is the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery. Craziest place I have ever seen. The hatchery achieves annual releases of approximately 250 million pink salmon fry, and 1.8 million coho salmon smolt. And I think they are all back here now to spawn. You can literally walk on water over the fish. This of course attracts birds, Stellar sea lions and bears.

In Valdez we drove around town to check things out. Jett got a few good runs in at the dog park. We stopped to see our SC friends at their campground. We will move over there tomorrow. Valdez is a sweet little town. And they get an average of thirty feet of snowfall per year.

When we returned to basecamp we met two other Airstream couples parked next to us. Interesting that we have been crossing their paths since probably Fairbanks but have never met until today.

The bay has calmed for the evening. We can hear not only the vocal Stellar Sea Lions behind us but also coyotes nearby. We should have an easy move tomorrow and I hope we get to see the hatchery at high tide when there is even more action!
