Talk about something spectacular! This is the place. Seward, Alaska!! We landed a campsite just a block or so from the main part of town and right on the ocean. We were looking for three nights here but were very happy with getting two nights. We are steps away from the historic start of the Iditarod Trail in Seward, AK. The ocean waves will be a fabulous sound lullaby to go to sleep to.
Jett and I took a fun walk through the waterfront park. Earlier we had seen a kid riding a tricycle with a cooler on the back. He was cranking ice cream truck music. Cool. What a gig! Then on our walk I saw a cute little girl who had chocolate smeared all over her face. Like she had just eaten an entire chocolate pie without a fork and hands tied behind her back. She asked what kinda dog I had. I asked what kinda ice cream she had. She then said ’Wait! How did you know I had ice cream?’
My reply to her was that I could tell. All while her mother sat watching, listening and laughing at our conversation. She then began to tell me about buying the ice cream from the ice cream man and wanted to know if I had seen him. Why yes I replied! She said yeah that was him and that he was playing music. And the music was kinda catchy! I nearly fell over. It was a sweet moment in time for sure!
We are camped near a few other Airstreams on the waterfront very close to the Alaska SeaLife Center. Chatted with a few Airstreamers. Our tour around town is not complete but at least we have the basics. Enjoyed an easy walk and visit to the nearby Lowell Creek Waterfall. Then some shopping in town. Had thought we would go to one of the dive bars for an adult beverage but landed at the Flamingo Lounge!
The Flamingo Lounge is an upscale historic Martin Scorsese-esque lounge. A classic steakhouse with a local craft cocktail lounge. As David Bowie said, turn and face the strange. Welcome to the Flamingo! It has an eclectic and cool vibe atmosphere.
We enjoyed chatting with the bar tenders. One who spends the winters in Jackson, Wyoming and the other is from Salt Lake City, Utah. Both favorite places for us to visit! Our conversations also included a fun exchange of traveling information with a guy from Texas visiting with his kids and father-in-law.
There was so much more to today but also so little time in each moment. We hope to meet up with most of them again tomorrow. Until then we sit here by the Airstream listening to the the soothing and slow rolling sound of the ocean waves crashing into the beach behind us.
