9/8 - KODACHROME BASIN STATE PARK (No cellular service)

Last night made for a very uneasy sleep. Between the coyote coming through camp (right next to us) and howling outside an open window, Jett barking at the coyotes, then all the coyotes communicating, some intense wind and on top of that rain showers every ninety minutes all night, we were very tired this morning.

So just after sunrise and between rain showers I took Jett out for her morning walk. While out I know I was looking for wildlife but as soon as I got her back to the Airstream there were two bison right by the Airstream here on the island. What the heck?!

When we got on the road we had a one hour drive to our first stop ... REI here in Salt Lake City. Tim needed a new pair of hiking boots. This is the biggest and best REI we have ever been in! It totally makes ours back home in Winter Park look wimpy.  Inside Tim got his boots and I found the best display ever! I might just move in.

The landscape along our journey south of Salt Lake City today was probably the most intense as far as changes go. From the city to massive snow skiing mountains to fine grained sandstone along with gypsum, shale, quartz and clay. Tim and I have been in southern Utah before and we were excited to return to the area. It’s definitely one of our favorite places.

We have departed bear country for now. As if worrying about bear, bison, elk and moose in camp weren’t enough now it’s rattle snakes, scorpions and poisonous spiders. And let’s not forget the jackrabbits that Jett loves. Eeek. What’s worse?

In 1949 the Kodak Film Corporation gave consent to the National Geographic Society to name Kodachrome Basin due to its color and contrast. The colors change throughout the day depending on mood, sunrise, shadows, sky and evening light settling over the desert.

Kodachrome Basin State Park can be reached by taking Scenic Byway 12, an all American Road and one of the most spectacular drives in the west. Red  Canyon definitely lived up to its name. The colors are so vivid. The redrock and semi-desert climate make this state park attractive to visitors all year.

Basecamp here in Kodachrome is again the best site ever! We have no cellular service or WiFi but have full hook-ups. The bathhouse shower you would think was located in a Spa! Best shower ever with its stone laid floor and massive rain shower head. I remember not being able to get the site I wanted and having to settle for this site. Not a bad choice! Those people can have that other site. Everything always works out.
