9/15 - ZION-MOUNT CARMEL HIGHWAY

Since we had extra time here in Zion National Park, we decided today to drive the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway (Hwy 9) without the Airstream. This is the road that we came into Zion on.

Later in the week we will depart on this road. Today gave Tim a chance to drive it without the Airstream and gave us opportunity to stop at a few of the small pullovers that we otherwise wouldn’t be able to. Out and back we went! This twelve mile scenic road has 5 1/2 switch backs that allows one to descend steep distances in a short and safe manner and it has two tunnels. The longest is 1.1 miles long. This is the one we have to be escorted through when towing the Airstream.

Along the highway today we were able to spot some of the desert bighorn. They have adapted to survive severe desert climates. They are expert climbers that choose steep, rocky terrain that allows them to escape from predators like the mountain lion.

Late this evening we walked Jett to the far end of our campground to allow her a swim. She had so much fun! In most places along the Virgin River the current is pretty fast. We have been scouting locations and finally found this one. And of course she got into mud before we got back to basecamp!
