Rainy day! Thats how it started out. Tim and I walked to get our tickets for the Danny J boat ride. Then on our way to the #1 Ramp on the docks we made a quick trip into the Salty Dawg Saloon to check out their t-shirts. We plan to return prior to our departure from Homer Spit to purchase one.
Once down in the harbor on the docks we boarded the Danny J. From here we went out into the Kachemak Bay. The water was calm and very foggy. Traveled over to and cruised around Gull Island which is offshore of Prudhoe Bay. On Gull Island we saw thousands of sea birds. It’s a rockery where more than 20,000 birds often nest on the cliff faces. The fog in the distance was very surreal and beautiful.
The Danny J then slowly cruised into Halibut Cove where we landed at the Saltry Restaurant. Now this was and has been the most stunning scenery we have yet to experience in Alaska. And if we had thought Gull Island was surreal this amazing place was even more so. Absolutely amazing and we were so lucky to see it in its eerie fog drenched setting.
Our lunch at the Saltry was perfect. Phenomenal food. Incredible views. They seated us outside where we sat next to an open fire. We had lap blankets if needed. As we ate we watched eagles flying across the cove.
After we finished our lunch the fog had begun to clear and a walk was in order. Tim and I, along with the few other sisters and one other husband who also came, walked the boardwalk along the island out to an art gallery, past other cabins, through a workshop and finally to a coffee shop. The island and the cove were magical. You just can’t imagine what an amazing place this is.
Just when we thought we had plenty of time left, it was time to return to the dock to board the Danny J and return to Homer Spit. The sun was now out and we could see how different Halibut Cove looked in the beautiful sunlight. The wind in the bays had picked up but we still had a great return trip back.
Our day ended with another great gathering at our hostesses campsite. The campfire felt so good in the cold wind off the bay. And with it still daylight so late into the evening we were all up way too late enjoying great stories and everyone’s company. It’s been so nice meeting and spending time with these lovely ladies.
