D66 - 07/03/24 GLACIER VIEW

Headed out this morning towards Palmer. But first we did a drive by at the Iditarod Trail Race headquarters right around the corner. Then we needed to stop back at Sportsman Warehouse. Last night we somewhat got our heads around what we need for flys to go fly fishing here in Alaska and knew they had a supply. We were looking for Dolly Llamas, Bodangles, Wooly Buggers, Egg Sucking Leeches and some Parachute Adams or at least anything that kinda represented these. Got what we could and were on our way.

Then we began heading east towards Palmer and finally landing in Glacier View. Tim and I are here for a 4th of July celebration like no other and have looked forward to this for a few years. The scenery has definitely changed. It’s absolutely amazing. I think we have found Alaska! We are in the mountains as opposed to seeing them from a distance. The vast mountains and majestic peaks here are just a stunning!! The Matanuska Glacier is right here too! And we might be able to see Dall sheep from our campsite.

The Glacier View Retreat holds a unique and entertaining celebration. This is the home of the famous launching of cars over a 300 foot cliff on the 4th of July. Not many fireworks up here if you can’t see them. So this is what they do! We are staying down the road just past the event at Grand View RV. After passing by the venue and getting settled at basecamp we decided to head back over to the venue to get an idea of what was in store for tomorrow.

Right away we met a couple who wanted their picture taken in front of a launch vehicle. We will see them tomorrow. And then we spotted our skoolie friends! Ramblin’ Rose with Jett’s friend Reba!! They had already been on property for a day so they gave us a little tour of the place. What fun! So excited to be here and be able to watch all the entertainment tomorrow.

We visited the launch tracks. Saw a good many of the vehicles that will be launched. The launch crew  was in the process of working on a short bus that drove all the way from Atlanta, Georgia to be launched. I’ve been following their journey on social media. Before any vehicles are launched, all glass needs to be removed and the vehicle has to be fitted for the track rail.

For those who know Alaska and realize we didn’t go out on the peninsula … don’t worry we will be backtracking once we are done here in Glacier View. Had to come here first for the celebration! Tomorrow will be an epic day on our adventure!!

Travel day! Not much excitement except for one brief moment in time. I spotted a herd of elk migrating across a field. There were probably 3...
