D69 - 07/06/24 POOR JETT

Today I got up early to get one more load of laundry done. Not complaining because the view from the laundry room here is nothing to complain about. It’s very overcast today. Clouds are low and we had some light rain earlier.

Tim and I drove over to Matanuska State Recreation Site to get better views of the glacier. The site has a self-guided hiking trail that explains glaciers and how they are always on the move creeping and sliding downhill in an unrelenting journey.

This is one reason that this could be the last year for the Glacier View Car Launch. Ice melt has the river level high and its ribboned pathways are constantly changing. This change and the very, very extremely swift water current has eaten away at the river’s edge and taken away most of the car launch landing area.

The views of the glacier were amazing. We stopped at a number of lookouts. And of course we left the Nikon back at the Airstream! You can go out on this glacier to hike with a guided tour. We have a few other glaciers ahead of us and may take a tour on this one when we return this way next month.

After the self-guided hike at Matanuska viewing areas Jett got sick in the truck. Uggh. Poor baby. We then had to cut our day short to take care of her. Sheep Mountain will have to wait. Once back at basecamp we cleaned up the backseat where she rides and I made another trip to the laundry on property.

The rest of our afternoon was spent outside the Airstream in 55* temperatures (sorry FL fam) taking care of her until she stopped. Not sure if she snatched something off the ground without us knowing. (She is a lab of course) Or if the snack our new Alberta friends gave her did it. Ugggh.

Meanwhile I had made a drink. Not any drink but a syrupy adult beverage drink. Somehow, I guess I had a seizure, while switching the cup in my hands, I flipped the cup and it went everywhere. Thank goodness we were outside. I only had a few sips. It went on my pants. On my Salmon Sisters Xtratuf boots. Mostly all over Jett’s outside bed. Tim said I was cut off! Hah.

Backtracking tomorrow! So excited!! Tomorrow we will backtrack through Palmer and Wasilla. Then to Anchorage and finally out onto the Kenai Peninsula. This will be another exciting experience we have waited for and looking forward to some spectacular time exploring the stunning landscape out there and fishing on our Epic Adventure.

Travel day! Not much excitement except for one brief moment in time. I spotted a herd of elk migrating across a field. There were probably 3...
