July 30, 2021 Ghost Village Road and Earthquake Lake

Ghost Village Road …

So picturesque! Just a beautiful place here on Earth!! I don’t think I have ever seen as much fly fishing happening in one place at one time. And Ghost Lake Road is the place to go. Fisherman and fisherwoman’s paradise for sure!

The entrance to Campfire Lodge splits into Ghost Village Road. So this is very walkable for us even though we drove it. The lodge that we are staying at offers breakfast in the cafe connected to the office and they also have a fly shop there. This is very convenient for those fishing and staying in the area.

After we drove out there and back we headed west to explore the area. Earthquake Lake is just a few miles away. We discovered this beautiful lake with a nightmare of a beginning. In the middle of the night in 1959 a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit. In an instant, an entire mountainside tumbled down onto unsuspecting campers. Twenty-nine people lost their lives and hundreds of others were stranded.

The mammoth rock fall caused tidal waves and hurricane force winds in both directions. Major signs of this occurrence from sixty-two years ago are still evident. The history and events behind this are near unbelievable unless you see it for yourself. There is a visitors center located where the mountain side collapsed.

Now back to Ghost Village Road where we are staying. Down at the end of this road you can look across the magnificent Madison River, whose back-up from the earthquake formed the Quake Lake five miles from here, and you will see a-skewed old cabins dotting the horizon. These are cabins from riverside resorts located where the water left them 62 years ago. The locals call it Ghost Village.

Tomorrow, Saturday, is moving day. This will be our shortest journey so far. With a move of just four campsites over this could be a record. We will only be in the new site for one night. The way things are now with the crowds it’s extremely hard to get a campsite last minute for multiple nights, so sometimes a booking needs to be split between campsites. Onward.
