August 16, 2021 - Some Days Don’t Go As Planned

The move this morning was quick and easy. By the time we finished breakfast, coffee and packing for the move the guys were ready to escort us to the other side of the river at 10:30. Even though I say quick it still took all morning. Once on the other side we had to unpack and get set back up.

Our new basecamp has grass! Pretty manicured, lush beautiful green grass!! Funny as much as we have worked with Jett over the years to do her ‘business’ in gravel she almost turned her nose up to the grass.

After lunch the plan was to go back to Bear Creek Trailhead to fish. And like I said … some days just don’t work out as planned. Just as we were going to leave it began to rain. Just a light rain, as we were catching the edge of a thunderstorm.

Then after about an hour, when the rain had stopped and it had started drying out, radar indicated we had about another hour before the next storm might come through. Our decision then turned to fishing here at the campground. Since the river’s bank is really steep in out new location we decided to take the Galloping Goose Trail, that is now about fifty feet from us, up stream. There are a couple of nice spots to fish a short distance away on this trail but there are lots of trees and brush. I guess you have to figure those obstacles out sometime! This option would be quicker than driving down the road. Just as we finished rigging our fly rods the thunder began again and the rain followed shortly there after.

Our fly rods are two piece and the longest is eight and one half feet long. So every time you go fishing the rods must come out of their short storage case. Assembled. Then rigged with appropriate leader (if needed), a tippet and fly.  Now we had fully rigged rods that don’t fit in the truck and it was raining. So into the Airstream they went assembled. The reels went into an overhead cabinet and rods propped up on hooks down the hall.

(Above picture taken a few days ago when not raining)

Figuring now, while it’s raining, we could drive to Rico, that is eleven miles north, grab a bite to eat, then return to basecamp to fish after the rain. Rico is a very, very small town. When we arrived in Rico Enterprise, the saloon and only place to eat, was closed. The internet had told us it was open! They won’t open again until Thursday because of lack of help.

Now that we had eating out on our minds we headed back past basecamp, then another twenty-four miles to Dolores. Along the way we checked out a few more fishing spots. In Dolores we found only a few places to eat. Dolores is not as big as I had expected but bigger than Rico. We decided on the Mexican restaurant that was open and had local vehicles parked. It is a hole in the wall. Not enough service to meet demand but we were not in a hurry and did not hold that against them. Everywhere we go there are help wanted signs for every business you could imagine.

Mi Tequila was amazing! The food there was so delicious. The spicing … perfection!! Even the presentation was beyond expectations. Very tasty!!! Some of the best Mexican food we have ever eaten is within driving distance of here. A truck stop in Cortez and a restaurant in Ouray. This restaurant is right up there with them as one of the best!

Afterwards, a few blocks away, we stopped in the local Outfitters store. Purchased more fishing gear and flys then headed back to basecamp as we knew Jett would be hungry herself and upset that is was now past her dinner time.
