August 9, 2021 - Tomichi Point

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park offers rock climbing, astronomy programs, Ranger interpretative programs, above rim hiking, inner/below rim hiking (permit required) and even cross country skiing during the winter. During the winter the South Rim Road closes at the Visitor Center allowing access for cross country skiing and snowshoeing past the closure.

Of all the exciting things to do here Tim and I decided to hike today. Since we have no experience rock climbing, scaling near-vertical walls we decided to leave that to the experts and hike the Rim Rock Trail to Tomichi Point. Tomichi Point is one of the overlooks we missed yesterday and the trail head is accessible right from the campground.

The hike is rated as moderate. I would say moderate to hard. The views were spectacular and we were glad we decided to go. Along the way we came across some mule deer. Saw fellow campers with their beagle and a few bunnies. Looked for bighorn sheep … no sitings. Thankfully we didn’t see any bear, bobcats or mountain lions.

(So glad she can read!)

(One section of trail that goes down and around!)

I have decided to present black and white photos today. I sometimes forget to post these. They are definitely more dramatic and give a totally different vibe.

Still no service. This is what they consider communication here in the photo below. The phone booth is located near the campground entrance. Sorry I didn’t call anyone … it didn’t take plastic and I need to save my quarters for laundry.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, is another traveling day. We are both really, really excited to get to this next location somewhere on the map below. It’s close to two other locations that we absolutely love. Even though it’s close it’s oh so far away. Our past journeys to this area of Colorado have not allowed us time to visit this super cool, hard to get to location.
