D50 - 06/17/24 AIR SHOW!

The fun starts where the road ends. And that’s what we’ve decided is what has happened at our current basecamp. Last night most everyone left. First the locals who dove by car. Then the day trippers in their RVs. Then the helicopter. Then the fire ground crew.

All that remained for the night was us in our Airstream. The couple in a truck camper. And of course the skoolies! Early this morning I drank my coffee outside on the beach in my pajamas. Tim fixed another delicious breakfast outside on the grill with eggs and bacon. Jett got to swim again in the river. She has a new friend … Reba from the Rambling Rose bus.

Today as turned out was all about the air traffic. First a private helicopter came and landed on the other end of the beach. Then we saw multiple military aircraft throughout the day.

AWACS - which is an airborne warning and control system aircraft.

KC-135 Stratotanker - military aerial refueling plane.

A10 Thunderbolt II / Warthog ground attack aircraft

F22 Raptor Fighters

It was almost like our own private air show down here on the rockbank. Late morning, the fire service ground crew came back followed by their helicopter. Basically it was just the three camping rigs here (no local day timers) and the fire service crew. Another great day!

Eventually this afternoon the wind shifted and the heavy smoke that we could see yesterday and this morning was now over us and dropping soot. Wasn’t horrible. We stayed out in it. Later we all gathered over at the skoolie for the evening and got a tour of the bus! So cool. Then finally called it a day!

Tomorrow the others will all depart and we will do more of the same here. Plans are for us to stay yet another night here on the rockbank then move into Fairbanks on Wednesday. We will see how that plays out and how long we stay in town.
