Sadly we left Chicken, Alaska this morning. And on the backside maybe that’s good because starting tomorrow thousands will start flocking in for the Chickenstock Festival that begins on Friday.
Continuing our Epic Adventure on Taylor Highway we only drove about seventeen miles. The road was rough. Probably 50/50 on gravel and pavement. Lots of frost heaves! Our destination West Fork. It’s a Bureau of Land Management area that we had hoped to stay at for a few nights. There are no services here and we still do not have cellular service nor did we in Chicken. Elthree-37 is doing her job, keeping our WiFi internet communications going.
West Fork is a fantastic campground located on the West Fork of the Dennison. But a few things, we’ve decided, will limit us to just one night here. It began raining not long after our arrival which will make the already muddy trails here worse if we stayed to hike. Rain will continue over the next few days. The access to the lake if we stayed to fish is not the easiest. And the mosquitoes are pretty bad.
So we are thinking we will head to Tok tomorrow and try to get the oil changed in Tim’s truck. If we can do that in Tok we won’t have to spend as much time in Fairbanks. Also we are hoping to possibly wash the Airstream in Tok.
Our campsite is lovely and has views down to Johna’s Lake. it would be perfect for my hammock if not for the rain. On the far side of the lake we can see a small lush meadow. Maybe we will get lucky and view some wildlife cross through.
One campsite here is pretty cool. It’s reserved for bikers or cyclists. The site has a nice covered pavilion that you can park under or even put your tent under if you wanted. And it has the best views to the lake below.
One note on first come first serve campgrounds. No matter what only pay for one night. If you love it pay for an additional night in the morning. If you don’t like it for whatever reason there is no obligation to stay. Move on!
Oh and another thing. No …
We did not see the aurora last night. The internet said we would. So it had to be true! Right? How did we fall for that? LOL At the time we thought it would be the darkest it was bright enough to read a newspaper out there.
Onwards to Tok!
