July 19, 2021 - Ten Sleep, Wyoming

Currently we are situated in the western foothills of the Bighorn Mountains. It looks like the sleepy little town of Ten Sleep is becoming our perfect basecamp for a good portion of this week. The only reason we are here is because this RV park doesn’t do online reservations and to get a reservation you must be persistent in calling them. Eventually someone will answer. We are so excited to be here to discover and learn the history of this little hidden gem that we would not have otherwise visited.

Tim and I drove through the breathtaking Ten Sleep Canyon that is a short drive west along the Cloud Peak Scenic Byway to get here. The byway goes through Bighorn National Forest from Buffalo, WY to Ten Sleep, WY.

Ten Sleep RV Park, where we are staying, has power along with full hook-ups that we are grateful for, being it was anticipated to be 100*+ here today and we have an eighteen year old malfunctioning toilet valve in our Airstream. More on that in another post!

Legend has it that Ten Sleep was an American Indian rest stop and got its name because wether you were traveling there from Fort Laramie, Yellowstone or Casper it would take you ‘10 days' travel, or “10 sleeps,” to get there.

There are numerous archeological sites here throughout the area, with frequent discoveries of artifacts such as arrowheads, pictographs and petroglyphs. As long as the heat subsides some we hope to get out tomorrow to explore some of these. It did hit 101* here today. This afternoon we walked to town for an early dinner. Otherwise we spent most of the day in the Airstream. As the sun was setting we got out and met several other couples camping here. One lives less than twenty miles from us in Florida. The other couple is in a fairly new Bambi Airstream. Small world!
