July 17, 2023 - RELAXING AT BASE CAMP

Last night was my best nights sleep yet on this adventure. I had injured my leg a few days before departure and just as it was getting better … someone had to get in that pool down in Texas. That set me back a week due acquiring an infection. So now that it is finally starting to heal I was able to get a better nights sleep.

Today started as a dreary day. Overcast. Then a few on and off again showers. Just enough to keep us from going outside and just enough to get everything wet.

However it was just what we needed. A down day.  Tim was able to re-program the solar monitor. I was able to take down and re-string the aluminum mini blinds at the kitchen sink window. Probably about 12 years ago I replaced the kitchen window roller shade with an aluminum mini blind. Now with thousands of miles underway one of the draw strings wore completely in two! It’s been flopping around since Texas.

The afternoon gave way to sunshine and beautiful blue skies. So then Jett got to have the time of her life! Back in her old stomping grounds … Swimming! Crossing the creek. Fetching rocks!! Can’t use tennis balls or they will float down stream and outta site in the blink of an eye. For Jett there are not enough rocks on the beach to satisfy her fetching ability. LOL

Let’s talk about another addition to our Airstream. Let me introduce to you Elthree-37. She is a Starlink internet receiver.

We call her Dishy for short. Named her after a Star Wars communication character. Back in February we decided to purchase her early for our Alaska 2024 adventure. Thinking that this Montana and Colorado outing will give us a good gauge on her ability. We also know back home during hurricane season she could give us a communications link that we may-not otherwise have if internet and cell towers go down. Although we forgot to get a pure sine wave inverter to run her off grid I was able to get one ordered and delivered to my sister’s home on our arrival there.

So while we are off grid we will get Dishy up and running two times per day. This gives us the ability to check emails and text messages while off grid. Providing us with satellite internet access. We can also stream our Netflix and other services if we want without any problem. Zoom calls are flawless. We could keep her up 24/7 but … why?! It would only help deplete the Airstream battery if left on all the time. And we would find ourselves on our phones more and that’s not the purpose of being out here.

This is how I am able to post to our daily blog and why the postings are later in the morning. It only takes a minute to get her up and running but it’s nice to enjoy our coffee first.

Our day ended with the sun hitting the clouds just right behind the Airstream. What a beautiful site to see …
