August 2, 2023 - HOME OF THE DINOSAURS

Interior: 66*

Elevation: 5,530’

The full moon was last night … supermoon actually. We had heavy cloud coverage in Utah so barely saw it at bedtime. I had a better view of it at 3:05 AM when Jett needed outside. Jett happens! But was so sleepy I had left my phone inside having forgotten about the full moon.

It was another travel day again. Where we land today we will stay put for about a week. Traveling south today through Utah, home of the dinosaurs, again the terrain changed constantly. We suddenly realized we were about to travel another bad road that we had traveled a few years back and decided to drive it anyway. It was either that or add a few more hours to our day.

In the end it wasn’t so bad but we have now noted that route.  Actually I started a works in progress ‘Note’ of bad roads that we have traveled. This one has cattle grates, bumpy sections of road, damaged guardrails, areas of previous avalanches, rock falls and of course loose cattle.

Douglas Pass! At 8,290’ in elevation it’s not an especially high summit. It’s got a 7* grade, narrow and some switchbacks. One place in the road looked like a big crack in the pavement and that at any moment it was going to slide down the mountain. Only about 1,000 vehicles travel it every day. Maybe that says something?!

When we drove through Montrose, Colorado it was 93*. Then in Telluride it was much cooler. The road took us through Lizard Head Pass at 10,260’ and by Sheep Mountain at 13,188’. It was then 75* when we arrived at our destination.

Our destination … Cayton Campground in the San Juan National Forest. We are south of Telluride, Colorado and north of Rico, Colorado. LOVE it here! Have driven by here so many times just never into this campground. Our campsite elevation is 9,340’! Absolutely no cell service here. And Dishy is having a hard time with the clouds, tall trees and a cliff on the backside. Our campsite is right on the Dolores River and it’s so, so beautiful here.

Approaching our campsite we immediately spotted this little beauty. Of course I went to tell them how much I adored their Airstream Bubble. And of course they were impressed that I knew it was a Bubble. I got a tour, then gave them an invite. They’ll be over tomorrow for a tour of our Airstream. We have so much information to exchange. What a super sweet couple!
