THE WAFFLE HOUSE INDEX ...
FEMA actually uses what's called The Waffle House Index to help measure a storm's impact.
If a Waffle House is open and serving a full menu after a hurricane, FEMA knows things are going well and the index is green.
If the 24-hour diner is only serving a limited menu, it means there may be supply or power issues in the area. The index is yellow.
But if a Waffle House is closed -- the index is red.
We were in the RED!
Not much has changed here today. Still no power. Tim was able to talk to a Duke Energy Accessor. He was making a list of materials needed in our area for repairs. We thought this was great news! At earliest maybe we will have power by late Friday. The Cyclone Sweeper came today. What a big help! Again thank you Jim and Jan! The worlds best neighbors!!!
The picture above was taken after all the big chunks and limbs were removed.
And this picture we took this evening! The Airstream is back in place. We still have more piles to clean up but for the most part we are looking much better. So many others are way worse than we currently are.
Looking back ... the picture above was taken the evening before the storm hit. Notice in comparison to the other after pictures above how stripped our trees are of leaves. Below is a screen grab of the radar where we live (blue dot) in comparison to the center wall of Hurricane Irma as she passed.
I drove around on the golf cart again today and realized just how lucky we all are. No loss of life in our town.
I was planning on running in the morning but not sure if the trail is clear yet plus somebody fell and busted their knee today. So it just depends on how how the knee feels in the morning. They say most injuries occur during cleanup from a storm. No kidding!

OUT WTH THE OLD ...
As we approach our next expedition we have made a few changes. One being removing the red WBCCI numbers displayed on both the front and rear of the Airstream. We were hoping for no shadows to be revealed beneath. If it did that was okay, it's part of its history. Once both sets were removed the rear cap showed no signs of shadowing however the front cap that is exposed to the sun revealed a slight shadow. The Airstream has since been Walbernized and the shadow reduced. You can barely see it depending on the angle of the sun. In doing this we wanted to hopefully prevent any filiform from developing there like it has under a few small manufacturers stickers in other places. We will now build a plaque to display our new same number red WBCCI membership number. At a glance the difference in look, looks like a 'new' Airstream to me! (she is now fourteen years old from the time she left the factory)
For a few years I've had my eye on a wooden cutting board that covers the round kitchen sink inside the Airstream. I finally broke down and ordered one. I have a plastic one that came with it that I will still keep ... just wanted a splash of color to add some texture to the kitchen. So don't want to cut on the new one! It is so beautiful and fits perfectly. Turnco Wood Goods makes these amazing pieces of art custom just for these sinks and puts them into production when you order. They picked out some beautiful wood for mine!

Turnco also makes other beautiful products for your home and Airstream.
In a few weeks we will be departing with the Airstream to head south. It's been five whole years since our last visit to the Keys. We have two familiar accommodations to re-visit along with two new to us accommodations to explore. This will be the first visit for the girls to the Florida Keys and hopefully we will get them some good water time. Fingers crossed they wont want to hunt the iguanas down there!
Stay tuned for our departure!!!
