HOT, HOT, HOT . . .

As we left home today to head south the temperature outside was approaching 90*. Near record highs for his time of year as we should be closer to 80* for an average daily high. While we passed through Ft Myers the temperature hit a scorching 96*. I hope my sisters orchid will survive in our absence since it just bloomed last night. I have been it's keeper since she moved to Montana where they just received their first snow yesterday. Send some our way!

Upon our arrival at Koreshan Historical State Park in Estero, FL it had cooled to 90* outside and just 88* inside the Airstream. This will be Jett's second official camping trip and three years since we have attended this event with the Tin Can Tourists. The TCTs will hold an Open House to show off their vintage trailers this Saturday. This event will be open to the public.

Estero was established and incorporated by the followers of Cyrus Teed, who proposed a theory that we live on the inside of the Earth's outer skin, and that celestial bodies are all contained inside the hollow Earth. This theory, which he called Koreshan Unity, drew followers to purchase and occupy a 320-acre tract in 1894. They were business-oriented and lived communally, prospering enough to found its own political party ("The Progressive Liberty Party") and incorporate the town on September 1, 1904 as Estero. The 1908 death of Dr. Teed (who claimed to be immortal) was a critical blow to the group's faith, whose membership dwindled into the 1960s.

In 1961, the four remaining members deeded the land to State of Florida as a park and memorial. I'll take pictures of the settlement later in the week.

After we got settled and right at sunset we walked the short distance to the boat ramp where Jett was able to take a little dip to cool off in the Estero River. Tomorrow we will meet up with our group as the first day of this event begins.
