D149 - 09/24/24 TELLURIDE, COLORADO

Our drive to Telluride today was nothing but spectacular. The leaves on the trees are continuing to peep and change color. These are all mostly vibrant yellows and golds on the quaking aspens and cottonwood trees. Just stunning scenery the entire way. There are just a touch of red and orange leaves in a few places.

Our usual routine to get to Telluride is to drive to Mountain Village where we park the truck then take the gondola into Telluride. The towns of Telluride and Mountain Village are linked by a spectacular, 12-minute 2.4 mile ride on a free gondola—the first and only free public transportation system of its kind in the United States. This is a very popular and scenic attraction that provides access to hiking and biking trails in the summer and the ski slopes in the winter. Last year we took Jett into Telluride on the gondolas.

A fly shop was our first stop. Then the Ace Hardware was next. We were looking for some hardware wire or some sort of grate for the new homemade fire pit. They had large rolls of what we needed but we don’t need that much. So we moved on to Brown Dog Pizza for a late lunch. LOVED it! Saw our Airstream neighbors from the campground there. They hung with us until their table was ready. Then we met a lovely couple looking for a new home up there. They had found one but the price needed to be reduced by $300,000 to $400,000 dollars for them to even consider it.

The return back to the truck took us on the gondolas again. Riding the gondolas is my favorite thing to do up there other than walking around town and eating delicious food and trying different local beers. We met a retired firefighter and his wife from Oklahoma City who wanted to ride with us in the gondola. Another lovely couple.

On our return to basecamp we stopped and drove through Lizard Head Pass. There are some amazing boondocking spots there but a nice drop off from the road to get into it. Figured with the new lift kit we might be able to get in now and we wanted to drive it without the Airstream in tow. We found a nice surprise in that they have fixed it! No more ledge drop off from the road!!

I went flying fishing for a few minutes when we got back to the Airstream. Didn’t get anything and didn’t expect to. The river is pretty low. Which is usual this time of year. Will take a hike from basecamp tomorrow to search for some deeper areas. Ended the night with another great campfire. Tonight’s was better because we added the lava rock into the ammo

box to disperse the flame. Now we will need to drill some vent holes tomorrow on the sides as the next improvement.
