D132 - 09/07/24 OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK

Our drive to Olympic National Park this morning took us through the very small town of Joyce, Washington where we stopped to fuel the truck. There’s only one place in Joyce to fuel and that’s at the General Store. They have everything there! You can purchase anything from flip flops, to plumbing supplies, to milk and fresh produce. Also you buy stamps here because the post office is housed inside the store as well.

Our destination today was the Lake Crescent area of Olympic National Park. The very narrow winding road to get there took us along the lakes edge. Lake Crescent is a glacier-carved lake of sheer scenic gorgeousness and is over 600 feet deep at its max depth point. We decided to head to the Storm King Ranger Station and from there we would hike to the Marymere Falls.

This hike takes you through old growth forest with large towering fir and hemlock trees. It’s an easy hike until the end where there’s a few steep sets of stairs with some switchbacks. Seeing the beautiful ninety foot waterfall is worth the hike!

About three quarters of the way back to the truck we decided to take a detour to the Lake Crescent Lodge. The lodge is nestled on the shore of Lake Crescent. Here we grabbed a cold brew and were about to sit on the sun porch when the bar tender suggested we sit outside on the beach. Yes! Perfect suggestion as the weather today was lovely. Now we had to find our way back to the truck, basically we hiked a big triangle, where we had our late picnic lunch before heading back to basecamp.

Jett stayed at the Airstream today and was excited to see us on our return. She then enjoyed a walk with us over to the bunkers. Camp Hayden use to be here and was part of a World War II modernization movement in the coastal defense system. Two sixteen inch guns were installed here to defend against enemy naval aggression. Barracks and support facilities were also built to house the 150 soldiers that were stationed here.

Later in the evening, right after dinner, Tim and I walked back out to Tongue Point for sunset. Some cloud coverage was now present but it was still a very beautiful sunset on the rugged Pacific coastline.

(*Side notes: We did get to see Tim’s brother’s cruise ship come in last night. And we have to wait until Monday for repair shops to open to make calls to get the truck AC repaired)

Last night at the museum we had rain off and on throughout the night and very strong winds. Other than that it was a very quiet night. Oh an...
