D8 - 05/06/24 BISON AND MORE BISON

Travel day! And just like that as if an Assistant Director cued the bison and prairie dogs at the Pinnacles Entrance on our departure of Badlands National Park the timing could not have been more perfect. There they were, sending us off and wishing us a safe journey north to the future.

Our journey today took us west on I-90 through Rapid City and Sturgis. Dodging the red/purple then blue on the radar. Eventually we headed north off I-90 in Spearfish.

This route took us through Buffalo, SD population 346. We stopped at the only small grocery there to purchase creamer. I normally pay $4.49 for it this little community grocery had it for $6.39. Eeek. But I love creamer! Then we pulled into their town park to make sandwiches, walk Jett and take a short break from the intense windy driving.

Once back on the road and just as we were getting close to the North Dakota state line … BOOM … No notice … No road!! Here they grind up all the old pavement and let those traveling fend for themselves. Twelve miles at 35 mph on a gravel road bed. Guess this will be our precursor to Alaska.

Final destination … Theodore Roosevelt National Park! Spectacular. It definitely reminds us of Badlands but greener. When we went to the Visitor Center to check into the campground two young ladies were being sworn is as Junior Rangers to honor, protect and be stewards of our National Parks. Goose bumps. It’s always a thrill for us to witness these special occasions.

Our campsite is great. We have a pretty amazing view of the meadow along the Little Missouri River. At Badlands we had to be aware of rattlesnakes. Here, at this location, begins our ‘keep your head on a swivel’ mode and be even more aware of our surroundings. Tons of bison here. We hear they come through the campground on a daily basis and there are definitely remnants of their passings. 💩 Jett is going to love it here! LOL
