The drive took us from Wyoming to Idaho to Utah. From rocky jutting mountains poking up into the clouds to miles of soft golden prairies of golden wheat to the smooth foothills of the mountains rolling into The Great Salt Lake here in Salt Lake City.
Our destination for one night was Antelope Island State Park. Knowing it was a risk ‘of would we like it or not’ we think we found a winner. The choice was either here or a Cracker Barrel an hour away in town.
The site we chose, site unseen, was the best! We are on the back side of the loop farthest from the lake but above the lower half of the loop near the lake. We can see everything from here. Overseeing a portion of the lake and the entire campground with the mountains behind us and across the lake. Each site has a covered pavilion over the picnic table. A fire pit built into the patio next to the picnic table. And the view of the surrounding mountains with all the wild sunflowers is just beautiful.
When we arrived a bison was wandering through camp and just after sunset coyotes were chattering back and forth. The lake is the largest west of the Mississippi and one of the saltiest in the world. The island is home to free-roaming herds of bison, mule deer, and pronghorn antelope.
Not knowing what we were getting into it has been a pleasant surprise at the end of a long day on the road. Maybe just a slight bit disappointed that we are here just one night. Tim and I sat outside long after dark enjoying the sights of the night and the weather.
