9/24 - SILVERTON, COLORADO

Woo-hoo and a yiiipppeee ki-yay! Tim and I made it from Kanab, Utah to Silverton, Colorado today. This will be our basecamp for exploration over the next five days. The landscape went from desert ...

To mountains in what seemed like a blink of the eye!

Along the way we passed so many amazing things that we did not have time for. Glen Canyon Dam,  Horseshoe Canyon, Antelope Island and Slot Canyon, Lake Powell, Navajo Nation, John Wayne’s cabin, my favorite truck stop in Cortez Colorado, Mesa Verde National Park and Durango!

Silverton Lakes RV Resort is another commercial campground. We are located in their newer south section that is right in town. Highway 550 running north out of Durango is a very scenic drive. As it continues north of here to Ouray that section is known as the Million Dollar Highway.

Silverton is a Wild-West mining town, 135 years in the making. The rush began here in 1874. The railroad arrived in 1882 that brought even more of a boom. Dance halls, gambling, saloons and brothels followed. There were shoot outs in the street. Maintaining law and order was difficult from the beginning.

The Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad currently run tourists between the two towns. Tim and I took this roundtrip train ride five years ago and that’s when I dropped my GoPro off the train while transitioning between rail cars. The camera was recovered and I discovered the best picture on it, taken by mistake from the Speeder Rail Car that recovered it.

Tomorrow we are thinking about just exploring Silverton by foot and learning more history on this very special place. The entire town is walkable
from basecamp. The temperature is definitely cooler here with lows near freezing for the week!
