9/23 - THE GRAND CANYON

Today rain was to move into the area. Slot canyon hiking is not advisable in these conditions. So Tim
and I opted for a road trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Located just one and a half hours away in Arizona we set off to go have lunch and a cold brew there. It’s an easy drive and definitely the road less traveled. Eighty miles from the nearest full size grocery store here in Kanab, Utah. The North Rim is only visited by 10% of all Grand Canyon visitors. Reason is it’s more remote and harder to get to. I’ve not been to the South Rim (commercialized) but I hear the North Rim is more beautiful and offers a more authentic experience.

Even with the impending weather the canyon gives an awe inspiring view. It’s one mile deep and ten miles across. Takes 12-15 hours to hike rim to rim and five hours to drive around from one side to the other. The North Rim will close in three weeks for the winter. The last time we were here it was during that last week. Winter continues to chase us. Fall is already showing signs at the North Rim. The high was to be 65° down there today. It was  55° when we arrived at lunch time and we had left our heavier coats back at the Airstream. By the time we left to return to Kanab it was 54°.

Tomorrow brings another moving day for us. Tim and I are kinda doing a little zig zag on our next few stops. It will definitely be colder at our next location. We have been to this next town previously but for just a few hours and spent half that time retrieving a GoPro that someone (me) flung off a train. So this time we can stay in town, explore the area and just watch the train roll in everyday.
