Just a short drive away is the ghost town of Grafton. Tim and I decided to take road trip there today as opposed to the hike we wanted to do. Today called for a slight chance of rain and 45 mph wind gusts. Not the best conditions for a slot canyon hike.
The drive to Grafton can be reached by a turn in the sleepy town of Rockville. The Grafton settlement began back in 1859 by Mormons. It faced harsh conditions to try to survive. In 1945 Grafton became a ghost town for the second time. It’s now listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
Many movies have filmed here including BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID shot in 1969. It was a fun adventure going out there to see the landscape and historic buildings. The photo below was taken almost from the same angle in the scene with Paul Newman and Katharine Ross. In the scene they went ridding by on a bicycle to the music RAIN DROPS KEEP FALLING ON MY HEAD.
It always gets me to wondering ... how and where basecamp was set-up for the crew? Where did they stay? And what about crafty and catering?
After our adventure out to Grafton we stopped at the local laundromat in Springdale. I don’t think I would ever tire of folding clothes with this view.
Then we had a late lunch/early dinner at Rosita’s Santa Fe Kitchen. So super yummy! Great to be in a place to get authentic cuisine that you love! We did not eat all that food (amateur mistake) but we did however drink all the beer!
Rosita’s is very dog friendly. They LOVE and encourage you to bring your dogs. Jett was on her best behavior there and found some grass!
She was so good today that we took her for another swim in the Virgin River once we returned to basecamp.
