Wow! Crazy day today. We got up early and I mean early to catch the sunrise at Cedar Creek. Sunrise was at 6:08 am! Spectacular!!! Tim, Jett and I then got a quick breakfast and off to the Cedar Island Ferry dock to embark by 10:30 AM.
Our arrival to the dock at 9:30 AM was perfect to get in line. While waiting we could walk Jett and get sorted prior to departing. Then in no time we boarded. It was a tight squeeze and I mean TIGHT. There was no getting in the Airstream. I could barely get out of the truck.
The journey took two hours and fifteen minutes to get across the sound to dock in Ocracoke. This now begins our adventure of the Outer Banks. The Outer Banks consists of a thin ribbon of barrier islands that protect the coast of North Carolina from the Atlantic Ocean.
Ocracoke is only accessible by the ferry, private boat or seaplane. This is Tim's first visit to the OBX. I have been here before but working and took my first ferry ride ever then. It turned out to be a crazy panic ferry trip but I survived. More on that in another post.
The plan is to stay at three different national campgrounds here in the OBX. First up is Ocracoke Campground which is a part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It looks to be a fun and rewarding experience. Jett got some beach time this afternoon as we are camped just on the edge of the sand dunes. Here dogs are allowed on the beach if leashed.
Our campsite is nice and we have our pirate flag out since we are on Black Beard pirate territory. And did I mention no hook-ups here. No water. No electricity. I'll go into how we are surviving as the week progresses. This should be quite the experience.
