Today was lighthouse day! Just outside our door stands Bodie Island Lighthouse. It's 1.73 miles away as the birds fly. We can see half of it above the dunes from the door of the Airstream.
Jett had a blast. Of course they wouldn't allow her up in it. There is a height requirement of at least 42" to meet. Built in 1872 it stands 170 feet tall and is located on most northern island of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
The 214 steps that spiral to the top were not too bad to climb. Much easier than I anticipated and equal to climbing a 10-story building. Bodie is one of only a dozen remaining tall, brick tower lighthouses in the United States. It is also one of the few with an original first-order Fresnel lens.
At Bodie you are able to climb at your own pace and the view from the top is spectacular. While up there I took in the gorgeous natural surroundings of the entire Bodie Island, Atlantic Ocean, Oregon Inlet and Pamlico Sound.
There were also a few trips just over the sand dunes to the ocean. It's interesting just how little we have traveled north and the beaches and dunes are so different.
On a quick side note guess what's here? Stall showers! BUT they have WARM water and the most amazing rain shower heads. Oh yea!!!
