Our drive today was scheduled for six hours but you know six equals seven for us. Then we passed into another time zone so we made that time up. Not really but made us feel better. We are now two hours behind time back home in Florida.
Beautiful drive here! Finally in somewhat cooler weather … at least the humidity is much lower and we are at a higher elevation. (7,550’) The low is expected to be 53* tonight and about 89* tomorrow. The humidity is about 25%. I’ll take that!!
This afternoon we arrived at the Base Camp Family Campground in Alamosa, Colorado. By the looks of their website it’s not a place I would seek out to go. However this is the best we could do that’s located close to Great Sand Dunes National Park with power. The campground there has no hook ups. Any other time it would be fine but with Jett that then becomes a problem. We traveled through temps from 100° to 80° today.
When we arrived at Base Camp it’s actually better than what we anticipated. Full hook-ups. Clean. Well kept. Large sites. They put us right next to the Bath House, Laundry and WiFi. Bonus!
The view out our door to the northeast is absolutely incredible. Blanca Peak is what we see. Known to the Navajo people as the Sacred Mountain of the East. Standing at 14,326 feet it’s the fourth highest summit of the Rocky Mountains. If you want to take a hike to summit that peak it’s an eight hour hike up there … one way.
It cooled off really quick at sunset. We are currently in what will hopefully become the World’s Largest Dark Sky Reserve. We had heavy cloud coverage and some light rain when we called it a day. No star gazing for us tonight. Hopefully tomorrow evening will give us a better opportunity for viewing the night skies.
