The drive today south was to be about 4 1/2 hours long. Add in stops for groceries and fueling then the travel time becomes 5 1/2 hours.
As we traveled the landscape south of Jackson was just beautiful! The road meandered along rivers and creeks and through forests. Then as the landscape began to change we have never seen so much of nothing (except in Kansas). It was mile after miles after miles of rolling wide expanse of nothing but sage bushes. Then some more of that.
Finally we began to see some rock structure and after a few small towns we landed at Deer Run Campground right down the road from Flaming Gorge Dam.
To get to the campground the road travels right over the top of the dam. The campground and surrounding area were a real nice surprise. The campsites are huge! If you have never been to an area it’s hard to determine the terrain. Google Earth helps a lot. I basically found this place by determining the approximate midpoint between two stops. Then figured out it was off the beaten path. Perfect! This one had a five star rating … out in the middle of nowhere. Decided there might be something here to see so decided to stay two nights to give us a day to explore.
