MIGHTY FIVE No. 2 - 10/16/14 . . .

Leaving Zion National Park was a little sad but we know that a return trip will be in our future. On our way out of the Zion Canyon on the Carmel Highway we did a time lapse from the roof of the truck. As soon as we get decent internet I'll try to get a link set-up for it.

Today's route was fairly short and enjoyable with all the changing landscape. Our Mighty Five No. 2 destination is Bryce Canyon National Park. The campground is currently set up on a first come, first serve basis. Which is why we had to rush to get here but at the same time needed to wait for the gift shop to open at Zion (needed our well deserved Narrows T-shirts) and needed the sunlight to hit the cliffs for the time lapse.

Bryce is in a way similar to the Grand Canyon however the rock formations are slightly different. Here there are many Hoodoos and they are the most concentrated in the world here as well. The northern over looks have the most hoodoos but the southern overlooks offer the most expansive views.

Hoodoos are tall skinny spires of rock (like columns) that protrude from the bottom of arid basins and "broken" lands. At Bryce Canyon, hoodoos range in size from that of an average human to heights exceeding a 10-story building.

Today we just did a driving tour once we settled in at our new base camp. Stopping at some of the lookouts along the way ... Rainbow and Yovimpa Points, Farview Point, Natural Bridge (really an arch), Bryce Point, Paria View and finally Sunset Point.

Tim and I returned to base camp to get a campfire going and to get a game plan together for tomorrow. The temperature was dropping quick. It's supposed to drop to 31* tonight. Then we went inside the Airstream to prepare for the nights entertainment ... JIFFY POP!!!

Tomorrow we are hoping for a below the rim hike to get a better view of the hoodoos!

TEMPERATURE: 60*
ELEVATION: 7,992'
MILES DRIVEN:  88
