DAM BLOG . . .

Really a portion of this of will be about a dam and a horseshoe of all things. More about that in a bit. But first Tim and I departed Gallup, NM around 8:30AM heading northwest.

We traveled through a few American Indian Reservations. The Navajo Nation and Hopi Indian Reservation. There is so much land out there, culture and history. The ever changing terrain surprised us with every turn in the road. We drove for miles taking the back roads through Window Rock, Ganado, Jeditto, Polacca, Shongopovi, Tuba City ... finally landing in Page, AZ by early afternoon.

As we neared Page we had to take Hwy. 89T, a temporary road put in over a dirt/gravel road. The main Hwy. 89 has been closed since last year due to a land slide.

After our five hour drive we arrived in Page, AZ at Page-Lake Powell Campground. We immediately unhooked from the Airstream and departed for the afternoon. We still had a lot of ground to cover.

The first stop in Page was the Glen Canyon DAM! Wow. The DAM is over 700 feet tall. The water depth is 560' deep at the face of the DAM. Once completed the DAM created Lake Powell. It took seventeen years for Lake Powell to completely fill the first time.

Our next stop was Horseshoe Bend. What a super magnificent place and just a preview of what's to see over the next three to four days. To get to Horseshoe Bend it's just a short drive out of town. Then a short 1 1/2 mile roundtrip hike. The spectacular view atop the canyon rim is where the Colorado River makes a 180* turn around a sandstone butte.

Afterwards we went to the grocery. I am always so amazed how other stores around the country stock their shelves. They always have more beer and way better produce than at home.

That was pretty much our day. What lies ahead for the next four days will amaze us also. It is grandest site beyond grand and one of my expected highlights of this trip. I am pretty sure we will be off grid so I will pre-date blog posts when we resurface. Stay tuned . . . the excitement of this Epic Adventure continues!!!
